I’ve reviewed a few pairs of 574 on this site before, but usually they are collabs or NB1s (IDs). These New Balance 574 Navy & Grey (M574BGS) are a great example of just how far $50 will get you with New Balance, as I found these on a super sale!
One cool thing about basic 574s is that you can go streetwear or preppy with them! Denim (black or light wash) and a dark top will give the more laid back street vibe while Khakis plus a navy, grey or white top will go more in the other direction.
The shape might be one of the main turnoffs for a lot of NB fans for this shoe. I think the suede and mesh toebox helps this pair out, at least from the side. From the top, these do have a stubby look which took some getting used to for me. However, I think at around $50 these are a good value and a good buy for sneakerheads looking for a cost-efficient sneaker that can help pull off multiple looks.
How Are The Materials?
The shoe falters here in some ways and wins in others. The suede here is strugglin’. Super rough to the touch, although not quite as bad as the dreaded “sandpaper” or “felt” texture. Where the shoe shines (literally) is in the 3M on the logo and rear. The large patches of the material seem extra strong and noticeably bright. Overall though, I would not be expecting even close Made In USA quality at this budget level for this brand.
How Do They Fit?
I went a true to size on these New Balance 574 in Navy & Grey, which provides a snug, comfortable fit. I like the slightly closer fit as I believe it helps the shape of the shoe over time.
